Froe.
A froe is used for splitting wood along the grain, it is hammered with a wooden mallet and then twisted to split the wood open.
The blade of the tool was hand forged in Oslo, from old car spring steel, marked with TS. The handle is made from Oak from a second hand table leg, turned on a lathe. Using a sham jig a sham was made to secure the blade to the handle by wedging it in the bottom.
I was inspired to make this tool by seeing swedish craftspeople at a “hembygdsdagen”, craft days making shingles for roofs of swedish houses and barns, a traditional technique
Medium: Oak, Mahogany, spring steel, boiled linseed oil.
Tools used: Forge, anvil, hammer, tongs, punchletters, belt sander, whetstone, polishing wheel, lathe, table saw, japanese saw, sham jig, drill, block plane, chisel, measuring tools, hammer.
Size: 340x180x30
